Azulfit’s Kundalini Yoga Retreat – Demystifying Kundalini

Kundalini may be one of the lesser-known strands of yoga, but it has the same origins as the more familiar styles such as Hatha and Raja, being inspired by the Indian philosophies of Tantra and Shaktism. In offering our introduction to Kundalini yoga retreat (November 19-26, 2016) here at Azulfit in Fuerteventura, we aim to demystify this ancient tradition, and share through experience, some of the building blocks to awakening physical vitality and greater awareness.

The origins of Kundalini Yoga

For hundreds of years the teachings of Kundalini yoga remained veiled in secrecy until a young rebel master, Yogi Bhajan, followed his calling and brought its message to the West. Bhajan arrived in the US in 1968, and breaking centuries old taboos began teaching Kundalini publically, offering the ‘hippy’ movement of the time an alternative, spiritual path to higher consciousness. The Yogi knew that the most effective way to heal people’s bodies and their minds was through real experience- giving them the power to affect real change. Bhajan went on to establish 3HO the Healthy, Happy, Holy Organization, as well as the Kundalini Yoga Institute, promoting physical wellbeing and spiritual awareness for the masses.

What a typical Kundalini class entails

  • Tuning in and mantra chanting

The Adi Mantra – Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo- typically opens the class, and is loosely translated as “I bow to the divine wisdom within.”

  • Pranayama- breath awareness exercises

Within a class you can expect to try a number of different yogic breathing techniques, which help to calm the mind, cleanse the respiratory system and bring awareness to the Prana Shakti. (Energetic life force).

  • Kriya- specific yogic techniques

The Kriyas include specific asana postures, breath and sounds, which work together holistically on the body, mind and spirit.

  • Meditation and relaxation

Meditation and deep relaxation are an important component to any Kundalini class, often accompanied by music, these help students assimilate the benefits of the practice and give the body a chance to rejuvenate.

The class is closed with three long chants of the mantra Sat Naam- meaning truth is my name, this mantra helps us to identify with our true nature, our highest self.

In sharing our Introduction to Kundalini yoga retreat this November, we aim to offer something magical and mystical to our guests, creating a safe environment in which to step back, declutter, experiment and allow true growth to begin. An experience that will continue long after the week ends.

The retreat will be hosted a Villa Surya  Fuerteventura November 19-26th, led by the inspirational Frauke Behrens.  Included in the package are seven nights in our ‘Relax and Revitalise’ rooms, an inclusive massage, delicious and nutritious vegetarian meals and much more.

Azulfit Kundalini retreat packages start at 745 euros.
