Joakim is a truly international teacher, an award winning instructor. Regarded as one of Europe's leading Pilates experts, he is a Certified 2nd Generation Master Teacher. Joakim will be bringing his wealth of experience and his great sense of humour to this fun and focused retreat.
The week will include classes and workshops for all levels and abilities, as well as discussions to deepen your knowledge and awareness of the method. As Joakim has studied with Lolita San Miguel, who was certified by Joe Pilates himself, it means that we will be receiving Pilates from a wonderful teacher who has studied as close to the source as possible. This is an amazing opportunity whether beginner or advanced, to really learn the Pilates method.
From beginner level to advanced, this intensive week with Joakim will guide us through the classical mat repertoire as well as present workshops and classes to explore the fun and effective small equipment, to help us with our form and understanding of the exercises - this will provide us with a great foundation to focus on the concepts of Balance, Breath and core movement, to transform the way we move, feel and think.
There will be plenty of personal attention from Joakim, who is renowned for going above and beyond for his students. With a relaxed and informal learning environment, there will also be plenty of opportunity for chats and discussions. This is a great way to get to know your fellow participants, and also to delve deeper into the world of Pilates, guided by a true Pilates Master teacher.
If you are a beginner this is an unmissable opportunity to really light your Pilates fire! For those who are already passionate about it, this week will be your chance to take your practice to the next level with a Master teacher who will challenge and inspire you.
About the instructor
Award winning Fitness Instructor, Joakim has Advanced Pilates Qualifications and is also a Sports Therapist. His studio, Bälans, is the largest studio in Scotland, and provides Pilates for sports professionals as well as classes for post and pre natal. He has developed a true centre of wellbeing with acclaimed teachers, massage therapy and back pain specialists.
In 2014 Joakim was awarded the Spirit of Flame at the UK Active Awards ceremony where the best and the brightest in the Fitness Industry are recognised for their efforts. Joakim beat some very worthy candidates from some of the biggest gyms all over the UK in the category which applauds individuals for going ‘above and beyond’ with the aim of getting more people more active more often.
Joakim trained as a Pilates Instructor with the Pilates Foundation, before qualifying as an Instructor with Body Control Pilates in 2004. Body Control's Lynn Robinson was there to open his studio. He has a Level 4 Lower Back Pain Specialist Pilates accreditation with REPs, and has experience teaching all levels of practitioner. Joakim is one of only a few UK teachers invited to study with Lolita San Miguel as part of her PMMP.
Joakim was the first man in the World to qualify as a BarreConcept Instructor. He’s no ballet dancer, so his classes are not pretty, but they are certainly effective.
A Swedish born Australian, Joakim moved to the UK in 1998. He is a former Australian Army Reserve SF Commando, Bondi Beach Surf Life Saver and Territorial Army Physical Training Instructor. Joakim first became interested in Pilates back in Sydney because of vanity (ask him why). He has always understood the massive benefits Pilates and Sports Therapy can have for improving wellbeing. He gained first-hand experience of debilitating injury when he ruptured his Achilles tendon in 2010. Pilates and Massage saved his sanity through the long rehabilitation back to full health and he has since taken part in a half marathon and triathlon races.
